Handling your new puppy

We cannot stress enough how important it is to handle your puppy gently and give it lots of love.

Most puppies like:

  • A chew toy made for puppies - saves on furniture legs and gives the puppy a place to aggressively chew without ruining your shoes or home!
  • A safe yard to exercise in
  • A dog bed - puppies like a warm safe place to sleep
  • Safe Toys made for dogs
  • Love and affection - puppies/dogs love attention, to be petted and talked to & played with

Advice:

  • Never give your puppy chocolate - it is toxic to a dog
  • Poisonous plant chart http://www.akcchf.org/pdfs/poisonous_plant_guide.pdf
  • Australian terriers can get dry, flaky, itchy skin if bathed too often.
  • When training your puppy just use the repetition and reward method
  • Do not feed your puppy from your hand.  Feed your puppy in a dish.  This way your puppy will not learn to grab at your hand or anyone else's for a treat.
  • 8 week old puppies go to the bathroom 10 or more times a day, so be sure to take them out often.  If you want the puppy to use a special area for it's toilet, always take the pup to that spot and say "potty", then keep the pup in that area until it goes potty and then tell it what a good dog it is and reward with a pat or a hug.  If you repeat this procedure every time, the pup will learn where the toilet is and go there.  Puppies usually have a stool within 5 to 15 minutes after eating solid food. Be sure to take the puppy out to go potty before bed time.  So if you take its food up at night an hour before you go to bed, and then take it out to go potty, it probably won't have a stool until it is back on food in the morning.

If you raise your puppy correctly You should be able to handle your puppy in such a way that you can touch or pet the puppy anywhere on its body.  You should gently handle every part of the puppies body.  Be able to touch his toes, look in his ears, eyes, nose etc...

Puppies are like any other animal.  If you play or handle them roughly they will play rough back.  It may be fun to wrestle with a little puppy, but as the puppy matures its teeth get stronger and its little wrestling antics will hurt!!!  Incorrect rough handling will encourage aggressiveness.  Never encourage your puppy/dog to be aggressive, teach it to be a gentle member of your family.

The correct way to handle a puppy is to always be gentle with it.  Give it plenty of toys to chase and roll and carry.  The pet stores, Wal-Mart, K-Mart, Pet-Smart, Target or any other stores like that carry great toys.  Never wrestle with your puppy!!  Always interact with your puppy in a gentle way.  Lifting it gently, petting it and rubbing it and snuggling with it.  Do not encourage rough play!!!

Always be gentle with the puppy and it will grow up to be a gentle dog.
